Spring is coming, which makes a perfect opportunity to visit Waldemarsudde. There, just by the glittering water, you can see paintings by the German expressionist Emil Nolde (1867-1956) until August. Among other things on display are his colourful landscapes, his interest for the grotesque, and explorations of Berlin’s nightlife. Also: don’t miss the program with a range of talks in connection to the exhibition.

Hitler considered all forms of modernism “degenerate art”, and condemned Nolde’s work. His paintings, previously appreciated, were removed from Germany’s museums and he was not even allowed to paint in private, but he couldn’t keep himself from painting hundreds of watercolours.

Some of those paintings, known today as “unpainted pictures” are also at Waldemarsudde. In 1942 Nolde wrote: “Every colour holds within it a soul, which makes me happy or repels me, and which acts as a stimulus.”

Come and see how you feel for yourself, this spring!
