Gabriel Orozco – Natural Motion

Gabriel Orozco Dark Wave

Don’t forget to catch the Gabriel Orozco exhibition at Moderna before it’s too late, the exhibition is on until the beginning of May. Relatively unknown in Scandinavia,  Orozco is one of the most important artists of his native Mexico. Highlights of the show include a whale fossil replica painted with graffiti-like symbols and ”Black Kites” – a real human skull. The skull is drawn with a black checkered pattern, done by Orozco during a long illness: the hand-made pattern becomes a discussion of time, and how we are all counting the days until death. Another favourite is My Hands Are My Heart/Mis manos son mi corazón from 1991, a photo of hands full of clay, connected to the burned clay pots that are also at the exhibition, exploring the theme of how far we have gone from the production process, as we are using everyday objects. Maybe we should all become better at getting close to the objects that surround us.

Finally, don’t miss the picture of the giant mummified whale in the desert. It’s beautiful, with the spine sticking up like rocks through an ocean.

Natural Motion will rock what is natural, and, perhaps, just a motion.

See the exhibition at Moderna Museet until May 4.
