Long live the bistro
In a day and age where what is hot and what is not switches at a dizzying pace that leaves even the most up-to-date foodies feeling slightly fazed, it is human instinct to return to good ol’ classics. And what can be more reliable than a bistro?
What makes it such a well-proven concept? Originally conceived in Paris, the French-style bistro embodies three persuasive traits – a relaxed and informal setting, a style of cooking that involves fresh and local ingredients and a moderate price point. Clearly, not much to complain about there – so here’s a crop of the trendiest new, non-trendy Stockholm bistros.
Bistroteket
All-day eatery Bistroteket is located in the heart of Nytorget in Södermalm. Patrons can start with breakfast, working their way (and day) through brunch, lunch, and dinner, and finally wrapping it up with a nightcap. The menu, which is a mix of French, American and Swedish flavours, features unmissable dishes such as a baguette smothered with spreadable chocolate, olive oil and sea salt and a *råraka* pizza.

Borrwalls Kök
With the tagline “simply delicious”, Lena and Lennart Borrwall aim to create a quaint neighbourhood vibe in their bistro, which is located in Södermalm. Creating good food using honest ingredients in an affordable dining experience is what drives the couple, who have extensive experience in running inns in both Stockholm and Västerås. Make sure you try the elk meatballs with potato purée, lingon berries and pickled cucumber.

Styrelsen Bar & Bistro
Johan De Mander and Christopher Gustavsson, a duo most recently spotted at Restaurant Pastis, have opened Styrelsen, a bistro located on Kungsholmstorg square. The venue blurs the menus of southern European nations, cooking up risottos and rillettes next to crème brûlées and steak tartars served with Smetana. A grand space featuring crystal chandeliers and fresh flowers in large vases is sure to make in impression.
