Jin Mustafa

By night, Jin Mustafa is a record-spinner mainly known as a techno and house DJ, as well as a member of the feminist promoter network Grupp13 and the music collective Samlingen. By day, she’s a second-year student at the Royal Institute of Art.

Originally from Uppsala, she moved to Stockholm where she would have more opportunities to do what she wanted. It has gone so well that the next step might be to move to a bigger city. Trivia: she loves to fantasize about peoples’ totem animals and her favourite fruit is mango.

What are your plans this year?

Me and my friends Lap-See Lam, Anja Enerud and Marlena Lampinen are continuing with our club concept Arcade Overseas with focus on experimental electronic music (genres such as noise, ambient, drone) and also visual and performance art by exclusively female and transgender people.

We had our first club night last spring, which was supposed to be a “one night only” show at Marabouparken. It went really well and we felt that it filled a void in the current nightlife scene, so we decided to pick up the project again and run it as a series of events at Fylkingen.

You play in a band too, right?

Yes, it’s called Karabasan Drane and I play with Robin Smeds Mattila. Our goal this year is to record an EP, which I’m looking forward to.

What does it sound like?

Imagine a mare making ultra slow techno in a horror movie from the 70’s.

What do your club nights look and feel like?

It depends with whom I promote and at which venue the clubs are. No matter who I work with, we always try to find open-minded venues to co-operate with. I want my club nights to be open, prestige-free and fun. No matter if you’re into the electronic music scene, just a little interested, if you just have discovered it or if you’re just curious, everyone’s welcome!

What’s your favourite night spot in town?

I don’t have any particular favourite when it comes to clubs. But if I want to dance I often choose to go to Under Bron where they in general do a good job in booking dance music. For a more relaxed night I might go to Fylkingen to drink tasty beer and listen to more experimental live music.

Fave restaurants of yours?

The Chinese restaurant Bamboo Garden, which has one of the city’s best clubs, Disko Dumpling. A welcoming and intimate atmosphere, great music and DJs and vegetarian dumplings to die for!
Another fave is À la Crêpe, the restaurant with the city’s best French galettes and pancakes.

Bars?

I’m very bad at hanging out in bars… but I want to become better at it. I’m more the kind of person that drinks and hangs out in clubs. But those rare evenings when I do hang out in a bar I go to my local, Lilla Mysingen, in the suburb Kärrtorp. It’s my favourite place to drink beer. It’s cheap, they have delicious pizzas, and a jukebox with all the awful hits from the past.

What do you think we will see more of in the music scene in the coming year?

In 2015 we’ll see even more fantastic producers and acts from Stockholm as well as the rest of Sweden. I’m constantly impressed by my friends, acquaintances and artists in general.

I guess it’s because there are a lot of talented producers and artists here, despite Sweden being a pretty small country. And artists who are not men are taking more and more place in the music scene, which makes me inspired and happy.

How can Stockholm’s night life get better?

Every promoter, bouncer, pointer and police who discriminates against party-goers with racism, class hatred and sexism or gender discrimination should lose their positions with immediate effect. That would be a good start to making Stockholm a better place to live and party in.

What is your favourite thing about Stockholm?

I love outdoor swimming and a warm and sunny summer day in Stockholm is perfect for a picnic and a dip in the water as you can find nice swimming holes almost everywhere, in the middle of the city and in the suburbs. And if you prefer swimming pools, look for the free and cosy outdoor swimming pools that you find in the suburbs.
