This spring, Cinemateket launches what is perhaps their most innovative and exciting program series yet in Sounds of Silence,  a pairing of classic silent films of the 20s with live music from contemporary musicians. “We screen silent films all the time, but this is a way for us to explore new artistic expressions by combining these old films with new music, which is something we’ve never done before,” says The Swedish Film Institute’s marketing manager, Christopher Mair. “By letting these two worlds meet, it will give people that have never gone to silent film screenings a chance to discover these films.”

Psychedlic rockers Dungen will kick off the series with the German animated classic The Adventures of Prince Achmed – the world’s oldest surviving animated film. The film features a silhouette animation technique that the film’s director Lotte Reiniger invented and would go on to become a major influence on animation styles.

“Dungen actually chose the film. We discussed a few titles, but ultimately the artists get to choose their film. This film is very unique in many ways: The director is a woman, it’s in colour, and it features ground-breaking techniques that would set the tone for future animation. It’s still today one of the best animated motion pictures ever made.”
