While it may be commonplace in some parts of the world, ordering a cocktail as the beverage of choice for dinner is clearly frowned upon in most European restaurants. But we’ll gladly disclose that we too, in the refuge of a trip to New York, have downed an entire carafe of frozen margarita with our fried chicken. And loved every minute of this guilty pleasure. Glad to have that out in the open.

We are thrilled to see that the trend of serving cocktails alongside elaborate fine dining has finally arrived in Scandinavia. First out was perhaps A21 Dining in Helsinki, pairing Finnish cuisine with specially-designed cocktails in what they refer to as ‘mind dining’.

Perhaps it really does take a foreigner to break the strict food and wine tradition in Sweden, such as beverage consultant and former New Yorker Ray McIntosh of Liquid Management who is the brains behind a new, one-night gastronomic concept. Teaming up with chef Björn Frantzén and beverage supplier Nigab, an 11-course tasting menu with cocktail pairings will be served at restaurant Frantzén on September 5. Crispy potato seasoned with dried spruce, thyme and mushrooms served with a tumbler glass of Tullamore Dew, apple and tarragon mousse and lemon (pictured) are examples of what to expect. The premium meal comes at the premium price of 3,895 kronor. Naturally, drinks are included.
