It’s still a work in progress. The transition from the heavy traditional cups that have been part of Swedish culture for decades to the specialty brews devoured by a growing number of coffee aficionados has really gathered pace during the last few years. Helped by an equally growing number of cafés and coffee shops that take both the coffee trade and spreading the gospel very seriously, the average Stockholmer is being well educated – but of course, it’s still a matter of taste.

One of the main proponents of high quality coffee is the Södermalm-based Johan & Nyström coffee shop. Their latest effort to enlarge the increasing band of converts is to arrange Stockholm’s first coffee festival – ”a coffee inferno to the sounds of smoking hot music” as they call it.

Over three days in early September, an extensive array of events ranging from tastings, talks and courses to various forms of both coffee and non-coffee related entertainment aims to tickle your taste buds into addiction at Södra Teatern.

Sweden is already among the top three or four coffee-consuming countries per capita in the world, and this festival will help aid what Johan & Nyström has set out to do – transform the Swedish coffee culture, break coffee’s anonymous status and bring about a sense of craft, as well as roasting coffee that is more exclusive, better tasting, more fun, more fair trade and organic.

Get inspired and absorbed in all things coffee-related – whether it’s farming, roasting, upcoming trends or latte art – to a backdrop of music from coffee-producing countries.
