New Kid on the Block

Summer now seems so close that we can almost taste it and lucky for us, the warmth will come with something we can literally taste. Having recently opened in Sickla, the beloved Urban Deli franchise is growing again with the addition of a brand-new location that could possibly be our favourite one yet. The scrumptious eatery that originated at Nytorget is expanding to the city centre and the bustling Sveavägen.

The café will be a lovely attraction in the Sveavägen 44 project. “We were drawn to the area mainly because of the building creators’ (Diligentia) concept. We loved their ideas and wanted to be a part of it,” Urban Deli COO Jesper Konstantinov says. “Sveavägen is also the perfect spot for a place like Urban Deli. Head towards Odengatan from Sveavägen and there is still loads of potential in that area of town. Soon people will have a social hub right in the center of things for a great after-work spot, a place to meet with friends or just to take away.” A sort of pop-up store version of Urban Deli will mark its arrival in July but the completion and the best parts of the new place will grace us in March of next year.

The first level will be similar to Nytorget’s setup, with a bar, dining room, grocery store, market and café, but the unique twist lies with the roof. “It’s going to be the biggest landscaped roof garden in the city, around 3,000m², and we’re hoping to make it pretty magical.”

“We are in the process of getting this through planning so it is too early to give away too many details. We are starting off with a relatively modest café on the terrace but we’re hoping to develop it into something that will really stand out in Stockholm” says Jesper excitedly.

This could become an outdoor hotspot in the summers, maybe even a part of it could be available all year round. “We would love to have at least a portion of the roof available during the cold months as well. It will be decorated with all sorts of Nordic vegetation so an all year experience would be a natural ambition.”

Although nothing has been confirmed as of yet the word on the street is the future plan for the building might also include a hotel owned by another company but co-managed by Urban Deli, with the aim of providing cheaper accommodation at a higher standard than hostels. It’s pretty clear that Urban Deli hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to developing their part of this new social hub. Considering we’re just across the street, you’ll be sure to catch us roaming in there very often come 2015.
