Coffee is so much more than just a quick shot of caffeine or a warming mug of latte. Since its start in 2004, Stockholm roastery and coffee shop Johan & Nyström has seen educating Stockholmers about coffee culture. The company focuses on premium flavored from handpicked farms – and utilizes special brewing techniques. Could it be one of Stockholm’s best coffee shops?

During the autumn, Johan & Nyström are releasing several Kenyan coffees from the country’s best producers, a selection they call “The Big Five”.

“They come from the central parts of Kenya, near Mount Kenya, which is the classic coffee-producing area in the country,” says the company’s master barista Eskil Ingvarsson.

“With the Big Five, we want to give people a real chance to learn about Kenyan coffee and compare the different tastes.”

The Big Five released so far are Tegu – round and sweet with tones of flowers and lemonade, Karogoto – nuances of black currant and grapefruit, Kagumoini – described as a juicy coffee with tones of sweet citrus, berries and ginger, and the latest, Kangocho – a silky coffee with distinct tones of black currant and blueberries. One more Kenyan is coming later this year.

Stockholm’s best coffee shop

Stockholmers are slowly starting to appreciate specialty coffees. According to Ingvarsson, more and more people are moving from latte or cappuccino to brew or drip coffee, eager to taste the different varieties and learn more. Many believe its one of the best coffee shops in Stockholm.

“People buy their favorites but are starting to use different brew methods at home. It’s lots of fun to understand coffee,” he says.
