Patrull Personal Attack Alarm

Thank God for industrial design. While we usually tend to only feature the hottest new design accessories on these pages, we feel it is time to focus some of our attention to the myriad of objects on convenience that are there to aid us in our everyday life. Some of these have been made sexy and inspiring to use through clever design, and IKEA’s Patrull series is one example of such thinking. Industrial designer Jonas Forsman seems to wipe away all negative connotations that an attack alarm might give through using a bright colour (also great for visibility in the dark), a material that is pleasant to the touch and a soft, rounded shape. Security has never been so stylish.

Lento

Insects and butterflies are huge in interior design at the moment – so why not take advantage of this in the creation of a smoke alarm? Finnish designer and artist Paola Suhonen has created Lento, a photoelectric smoke alarm that has won the Red Dot Design Award. The tape on the back insures an easy install, without the need for screws. Looking for something more discreet? Harri Koskinen’s pebble-shaped Kupu alarm might speak to your taste. What’s more, Jalo, the design manufacturer behind the smoke alarms, has been nominated for Formex Formidable award for 2013. Who said that safety had to be boring?

Sense

Another Red Dot winner, and winner of four other design awards too, is air purifier Sense from the Swedish firm Blueair. Launched in a range of appealing hues of gray and pastels, as well as mocha brown, the technology in this sleekly-designed box is said to make your home and office a healthier place by removing all pollutants from the air that you breath. Designed by the Swedish design trio Claesson Koivisto Rune, the look of Sense reminds us of the 2012 Mac Pro machines – both in size and design – and is most likely destined to become somewhat of a staple in design and health-conscious Swedish homes.
