Kalle Lööw had been cycling for years when inspiration struck. Last summer, when traveling in America and getting inspired by all sorts of restaurants and cafés, he started to think about how service was lacking in Sweden and decided to do something to improve that. And here we are at Le Mond Cykelcafé – Södermalms first bicycle café.

“Our goal is to offer a great service for bicycle commuters in Stockholm,” he says. “We went to both London and France to look at other bike cafés. Our main ambition was to have an indoor parking for bikes and eventually we want to have showers for cyclists.”

Kalle’s girlfriend, an architect by trade, came up with the concept of the café’s interior, which harks back to Manchester’s legendary Haçienda nightclub, with its bright yellow colour scheme and industrial furniture and flooring. Over the past months, the couple have been keenly collecting the biking memorabilia displayed on the walls in form of maps, photographs, old cycling shirts and classic bikes. An entire wall on the upper floor is wallpapered with images of all manner of celebrities straddling a bicycle.

And the menu is as ambitious as the design details. “My girlfriend and I are really into healthy eating and our aim is to serve just organic food. Our chef has been a dietician for 20 years so the kitchen is in good hands,” says Lööw.

“The interest has been huge since we opened and there are so many people that want to be involved, both cyclists and artists. We’re going to start having a cycling group meet-up here on Wednesday mornings, so we can combine a joint ride with a good breakfast. Besides that, we have all sorts of upcoming events like photo exhibitions, cycling on the big screen TV, swap meets, guided cycle tours and training sessions.”
