Sweden’s grand old lady of design, Signe Persson-Melin turns 90 this coming summer. She made her breakthrough in the design world in 1955 and 59 years later she is still going strong.

Her latest work is a tea set named SPM for Rörstrand, consisting of teacups, saucers, bowls and a pot – the latter a piece that in many ways is a symbol for her overall work. Persson-Melin has been extremely vigilant when it comes to pinning down the shade of gray used for the collection, which she describes as a gray with a hint of green when displayed in the right light.

If Signe Persson-Melin stands for tradition and timelessness, a brand that epitomizes the new Nordic design would be Danish brand Hay. Their collaboration with Sebastian Wrong, founding member of Established & Sons, has resulted in a range of products under the name Wrong for Hay. The Tela glassware series, designed by Silo Studio, is made in glass but has an outer surface texture reminiscent of stitched textile. It has four parts: a bowl, a small tumbler, a medium tumbler and a carafe.

Ponny

While many of Sweden’s glassworks are experiencing troubled times, Skruf, located in the region of Småland, has had its order book filled to the point where they have had to install a second glass oven. Little wonder, as stunning, crystal-clear creations such as Carina Seth Andersson’s vase *Pallo* and carafe *Ponny*, as well as the *Dagg* and *Ekollon* vases by Svenskt Tenn are all hand-blown on location. *Ponny* was designed for Save the Children International, and bears a logo label at the bottom indicating their co-operation with the charity.
