Design Store Galore

Words Micha van Dinther and Magnus Wittbjer

Winter will soon be well under way in our fair city and the vast majority are probably lamenting the fleeting daylight and the departure of the sensational summer of 2014. Design and style conscious citizens, do not fret – there is light at the end of the tunnel that we refer to as winter.

Trend analyst Stefan Nilsson has just (re-)opened Designgalleriet – a collective collaboration between Swedish designers and manufacturers in the experimentation and creation of new and exciting objects and shapes, in tune with what is trending on the global design scene. Visit Designgalleriet at Kammakargatan 52 in Norrmalm.

Another exciting address to check out is Hornsgatan 73, where House of Rym is located. The backgrounds of the people behind House of Rym are as eclectic and diverse as the designs they market. The common denominator is a shared interconnecting love for Swedish and Tunisian design, resulting in some very interesting work.

Known vintage design watering hole Dusty Deco recently closed their shop in central Södermalm, only to open up in a larger space at a different location. Dusty Deco carries hand-picked vintage furniture and bric-a-brac, often sourced from markets far away. Check out Dusty Deco at Hornstullsstrand 7.

Herr Judith is the sexually ambivalent name of one of the forerunners of vintage goods and clothing in Stockholm. Now a chain of stores in three different locations, it stays true to its passion – hand-picked, unique and often quirky items. The most recent location is on Hornsgatan 64.

Artek, something of a flagship brand for Finnish design, was bought by Swiss design brand Vitra in 2013 and to celebrate this new consolidation which is expected to become one of the design world’s new powerhouses, the brands have opened up a stunning new showroom on Bondegatan 21.

Last but not least, Nordic Design Collective is yet another local player in the field of creative design. Driven by a passion for small scale and individuality, Nordic Design Collective is actually a web shop, but between September and January, their first pop-up shop opens at Nacka Forum, where the designer stars of tomorrow showcase their latest innovative design ideas.

Little design excursions around Stockholm will fill your senses with fun, inspiration and cool ideas. Before you know it, spring will spring once again.
