Fashion and Furniture

Creative talents often come in clusters – actors that can sing, screenwriters that can direct and architects that can paint. Following this fine tradition of multi-faceted creativity, the Swedish design and artist collective Uniforms for the Dedicated is now trying its hand at furniture design.

Best known for its men’s fashion line, the collective has already tried its hand at music and films. Earlier this year, it presented a clothing collection and a short film inspired by the Tree Hotel, located in the middle of the woods in Harads, Northern Sweden – a project that also served as the starting point for the furniture collection.

The chairs and tables, designed and hand-made in Stockholm, are exclusively made out of recycled wood, with details of Tärnsjö leather. By embracing and taking care of something that most people see as trash, the designers aim to tell new stories and strive for a more sustainable way of living. Some pieces have been made out of scrap wood from the Stockholm archipelago, while material has also been sourced from old country houses and abandoned buildings.

“Our motto has always been to try the most things, and we’ve now worked on our furniture long enough to feel ready to launch it,” says creative director Fredrik Wikholm. “The collection is based on the Uniforms for the Dedicated philosophy; innovation through playfulness, quality and recycling. It’s exciting to form a new life- cycle for the materials we use.”

In September, the group also opened its first brand store. Located on Krukmakargatan on Södermalm, the it joins a bunch of other inspiring retailers, including the book, DVD and magazine shop PaperCut and the vintage furniture shop Brandstationen.

“It’s incredibly exciting to get to show our entire universe for the first time,” says Wikholm. “We will try to deliver a highly organic, surrealistic, playful and unexpected environment. Naturally, art, film, music and craft will be a big part of it, in addition to our fashion.”
