Winter’s long, cold and dark grip on Sweden has finally loosened up and has come to an end. Its departure marks the arrival of the time when Stockholm’s other face begins to surface. The city offers many activities and attractions, but if you ever get tired of the commotion that goes with it there are many places where nature can be the calming surroundings you yearn for.
The many lakes are freed from their icy shackles and parks can at long last boast their lush and green vegetation. In the first of two parts – here are some of the best outdoor spots in Stockholm that you can enjoy the long sunny days of spring and summer.
Bergianska Trädgården – Frescati, Universitetet
A quiet and isolated garden located just by Frescati near Universitetet’s subway station. Surrounded by the Brunnsviken lake and a variety of neatly placed vegetation it’s a beautiful place to visit any time of the year, but even more so during the summer when it can flaunt all of its colours. Its café and multiple benches makes it a good place for the one who seeks beautiful scenery and it’s an ideal place to have a picnic.
Karlbergs slottspark – Karlberg
A French-inspired park with influences from English landscape gardens, that’s owned by the military, open for the public from 06:00 to 22:00. You can have yourself a barbeque by the lake or enjoy the interesting sights such as Dianas Tempel – raised in honour of the sea god Neptune, the park’s rune stone or Karl XII’s dog’s grave. Being host to the military’s college there are plenty of sights for the military enthusiast as well.
Skogskyrkogården – Skogskyrkogården subway station
Inducted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 this cemetery is the second biggest in the whole country, but offers much more than the spookiness often associated with places where we bury the dead. Its architecture and scenery is internationally appreciated, with many modern chapels and monuments in addition to its more traditional ones. Skogskyrkogården’s biblical and eerie landscape has also made it a popular site for photographers and anyone who wants to take a stroll and enjoy some inspirational surroundings should give it a visit.
Blå Lagunen – Munsö, Ekerö
A former quarry filled with clear, blue water that’s rarely associated with the dark waters around the Arctic Circle. Artificially created but naturally beautiful this “Lagoon” in Ekerö, an hour from and just within the borders of Stockholm, offers an exotic touch with its sandy beaches and crystal clear water. Its size makes it a perfect spot for divers and swimmers alike and it’s a great place to visit during a hot summer day, whether you’re longing for a Mediterranean getaway or just want to take a cooling dip. If the temptations of a snack, an ice cream or a soda becomes too strong to ignore there are plenty of stands around as well.
Vintervikens trädgård – Aspudden subway station
Just nearby Mälaren lies this cosy garden. They regularly host concerts and culture events so even if you’re not a garden enthusiast you can find yourself a reason to visit. Within the compound is also an appreciated café, serving food consisting of their home grown ingredients. An ideal place to spend a day or evening in during the summer.
