Sonically, Ayshay’s first EP is a hard one to categorize. Using only her voice and a few vocal effects she’s reworked and reimagined the Islamic religious songs from her childhood. Although not completely void of beauty, it doesn’t often cut through the abstraction. The fourth and final track, a remix of the entire EP by LA-based Nguzunguzu, is the highpoint of the release, emphasizing and creating new builds and breaks in the music, as well as introducing important new harmonic ideas from their characteristic “global bass sound”.
