Cashmere-Cat-With-Me

CASHMERE CAT

Initially, I thought somebody had given The Weeknd some magic mushrooms, and let the Canadian songbird loose in some futuristic, smooth r’n’b existence where no laws applied. Then I realized I’m listening to the work of Norwegian musician, producer and DJ, Magnus August Høiberg, better known by his stage name Cashmere Cat.

This guy is definitely the most interesting thing that’s come out of Norway since Hank von Helvete sang about his erected member with death punk rockers Turbonegro nearly two decades ago.

What interests me most about Magnus is that he chooses to jump into the successful recipe of blending smooth r’n’b with futuristic hip hop sounds, all the while doing crazy experiments with his turntable.

In the summer of 2013, right after his genius remix of Miguel’s Do You? was released, Cashmere Cat decided that Norway wasn’t doing it for him anymore. With his skills and equipment in hand, he left the Scandinavian emptiness for a little more exciting existence on Manhattan. There, he’s been collaborating with artists like Wiz Khalifa and Jeremih, and the three joined forces with Ludacris for his latest single, Party Girls, that was released earlier this year.

And if you think Cashmere Cat is enough for one bitching night at Södra Teatern–think again. The most interesting producer coming out of the Sad Boys crew (although Yung Lean is the one who’s received most-part of the attention the last year), Yung Gud, is opening for Cashmere Cat on Friday. Yung Gud is actually the guy behind Yung Lean tracks like Kyoto, Ginseng Strip and Gatorade. I could go on forever. Yung Gud’s beats are out of this world, and he’s definitely the yin to Yung Lean’s yang. I’m excited to see where the young producer is going, and you should be too.

Cashmere Cat and Yung Gud are at Södra Teatern on April 11.
