On his website, Skellefteå-born Erik Karlsson aka Chicagojazzen, explains that he has been recording music under his stage name since he was in the ninth grade. Earlier this year, he uploaded everything he’s ever recorded on PirateBay. He never made too many copies, and the one’s who did get sold are lost to random fans.

His album Misantropi för nybörjare (misanthropy/cynicism for beginners) has been dubbed a masterpiece, and was just recently made available on music service Spotify. It’s a potpurri of sound, clashing together – sometimes fitting, sometimes not. For the structural connoisseur, it’s a complete disaster.

Karlsson is creating something wild and unruly with Chicagojazzen, something that no one else in Sweden is doing really. The only band I can think of that comes close to what this is, is Trummor & Orgel, the two-man band consisting of drums and an organ.

Erik Karlsson will be performing as Chicagojazzen at Marie Laveau this Friday. If you feel like experiencing some music live that you definitely haven’t experienced before, this is the show for you.

Chicagojazzen is at Marie Laveau on May 16.
