Exploding into the hearts of every jazz-loving Swede, Edda Magnason shot to stardom following her magnificent portrayal of the troubled Monica Zetterlund in Monica Z. Such was the power of her performance that few believed it was her first acting part, and Magnason’s striking physical and vocal similarities to Zetterlund made her a shoo-in for the part – even her spoken voice had an uncanny resemblance.
Södermalm resident Edda is currently finishing up her third solo album. Her music is moving, with piano licks and delicate production overlaid with Magnason’s unique voice. A voice that sometimes resembles Swedes like Anna Ternheim, Karin Dreijer or Norwegian-Swede Ane Brun. Such comparisons fail to do her justice, and it’s time that Edda Magnason stepped out of the shadow of other jazz greats – Zetterlund included – and got the respect she deserves for her music.
Catch her at the place where the film team of Monica Z discovered her – Södra Teatern.
Edda Magnason performs at Södra Teatern on May 2.
