When The Drums first emerged back in 2009 they seemed like a fairly standard indie outfit, complete with four members and sparky jangle-pop tunes. In the time since however, they’ve shed three members and pretty much narrowed down to Jonathan Pierce’s musical heart and soul. Pierce channelled the darkness from his extremely religious upbringing and his romantic angst into music deeper and darker than anything he’d put out before. That new darkness is certainly present on his new album Abysmal Thoughts, but he’s also retained the super-sharp pop songwriting that made the band famous in the first place. Which means this gig is definitely one for fans of indie dancefloors.
