New Music: Spin Out To The Dreampop Of Dim Vanilla’s ‘Mayo’

Dim Vanilla

There are several ways to come across a new band. The coolest is to come across them playing at some dive bar and watch in awe as they summon up a resurrection of the feeling people got when they saw Television play live at CBGB’s for first time. The least cool, and by far most common way, is to be sent their music in a PR mail. We discovered Dim Vanilla, a new Stockholm five piece indie group, because they kept liking out photos on Instagram and we got curious as to who they were. I don’t know how that ranks in the ‘ways to be discovered’ index (I’ll leave that to the history books), but it doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that Dim Vanilla, and their song ‘Mayo’, are really very good.

‘Mayo’ is a dream pop single with a lazy, wistful groove. There’s a little hint of Mac Demarco in the fuzzy atmosphere and the ramshackle spring in the guitar riffs, and that’s never a bad thing. Pair that with the subtle warmth and sadness in Felicia Holmström’s vocal, and you’ve got a great summer indie song. There are no official releases from the band yet, but you can listen to ‘Mayo’ along with two other songs, ‘Evil’ and ‘In The Sun’, on the band’s Soundcloud right now. And you should.
