The now sixty-five-year old Nick Lowe has without a doubt been one of Britain’s most influential rock and new wave artists. He’s also a respected music producer, working with acts like Elvis Costello, The Pretenders and John Hiatt. It was actually Lowe who wrote the song that was made into a hit by Elvis Costello, (What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding. Oh, did I mention his step-father-in-law was Johnny Cash?

Having written hits through the years: (I Love The Sound of) Breaking Glass, which was his biggest UK hit, and over in the US, he gathered some attention with Cruel to Be Kind. It’s almost like Lowe’s singing in his first one from Stiff Records label, So It Goes: “where it’s going, no one knows”, a suitable description of his career and songwriting. Writing hits for others, playing pub rock and new wave music like no other, and still not being internationally acclaimed on a bigger scale.

Alas, his cult-like status is not to be messed with. Lowe has influenced more song writers and musicians than he probably realizes. For the second time in a short period, Nick Lowe is returning to the proud Nalen, which is why you should be sure to grab a ticket and watch one of Britain’s most hidden treasures.

Nick Lowe is at Nalen on April 26.
