La Vie En Rose

From August 17th until December you can see stunning 50-year-old photos from Mali’s capital Bamako, shot by Malick Sidibé. The black and white photos in the exhibition La Vie En Rose were taken during the 1960’s and 70’s and portray a changing, hopeful, city, modernizing in the aftermath of a military coup and its recent independence from French colonialism.

Sidibé (born 1936) has been the recipient of several prestigious awards such as Hasselbladspriset (2003), International Center of Photography Award for Lifetime Achievement (2009) and Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (2007).

Aside from the photos  two documentaries about Sidibé are also showing during the exhibition: Dolce Vita Africana (2008) by Cosima Spender and Malick Sidibé, and Le Partage (2012) by Thomas Glaser and Franck Landron. There are also a range of presentations around the exhibition, so check out their website for full schedule.

The artist himself was present during the first day of the exhibition, when some visitors got to be photographed in the copy of Studio Malick that is part of the show. We’re jealous of those lucky ones!
