Sponsored by Mercedes Benz since 2008, Stockholm’s Fashion Week is now in the league just behind New York, Milan, and London, showcasing around 30 designers and focusing mainly on the intricacies and uniqueness of Swedish design mixed with innovation. This year’s events are again being held at one of Stockholm’s favourite venues, Berns, as well as Mercedes Benz Fashion Pavilion, and include fresh talent alongside some of Sweden’s most beloved designers.
One of the local names on show is jewellery designer Maria Nilsdotter. Accessories have successively become a more integral part of the fashion world and with designs like Maria Nilsdotter it’s no wonder. Maria’s designs show what it feels like to wear striking treasures, with jewellery detailed with some of the most beautiful silhouettes of gargoyles, skulls, and distinctive architecture.
You just opened your first store in Stockholm. What does that mean for your brand and for you personally?
I think it makes a huge difference to the brand, I can show my entire work and in an environment that is especially designed for my jewellery. I want my customers to get an experience from visiting the store, to understand the concept of the brand. The store is a little world of it’s own, it’s a bit surreal and unexpected – like the jewellery.
What will be showcased during Stockholm Fashion Week and what can we expect to find in this new collection?
I will showcase the new collection ‘My Town’. It’s inspired by architecture and details from beautiful buildings around Stockholm. I have then interpreted this into my own city, dark and romantic. The collection contains some large showpieces and headpieces as well as many rings, both fine ones and bolder cocktail rings.
What does Stockholm Fashion Week mean to you and how do you view its importance?
I think it’s a great way to be able to show my jewellery as a concept, in a setting, so I can show the feeling and thoughts behind the collection.
