I’m not the only that feels a certain nostalgia every time a DJ hits Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” on the speakers when you’re out. It’s one of those songs that you take with you through the years. Sean Paul was huge back in the day – he is arguably responsible for the mixing of reggae with a more hip-hop and pop-style, that helped reggae music make its step into mainstream.
Sean Paul was born and bred in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in a family that were primarily athletes so Sean Paul’s attraction to music was purely something he found on his own. When Sean attended college he went with the intent of going in hotel management field, but DJed on the side and collaborated with some reggae groups in the area that were thoroughly impressed with what he could do. His very first song that gained recognition in Jamaica was “Ladies Man,” which he did along with Spanner Banner. After the blow up of that single, he was signed by Jeremy Harding with 2 Hard Records. His next hit was “Baby Girl” which exploded him all over the Caribbean. His music eventually spread to the U.S. and his career took off from there, reaching the U.K. and gaining a huge fan base there as well. With hits like “We Be Burnin” and “Like Glue” Sean Paul was one of the most played out song on radios. We all know when the radio plays your song once an hour – you’ve made it big.
Although it’s argued that Sean’s best has come and gone, he is still going forward with a strong fan base and great vocal skills. His ability to make unique reggae styled music is clearly apparent. His show will range from his old classics to his newest stuff. He’ll be sure to play our heart’s favorites but also some songs that will be a part of his unreleased album, due to come out in the near future.
The show is bound to be memorable and guaranteed to bring out that inner tween that’s been dying to come out for a blast from the past. But who knows maybe even the adult in you will get hooked on Sean Paul’s alluring Jamaican tones.
Sean Paul performs at Marquise Club 18 October 2013.
