Elton John @ Friends Arena

There are so many things to say about Elton John. And yet, there’s so little that needs to be said about the legendary English singer and composer. The first time I really felt connected to this massively talented musician was when I heard ”Crocodile Rock” playing in a montage in the movie ”High Fidelity”, based on Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel. My image of Elton John had previously been that of a grumpy man in a velour track suit yelling at people in an airport, obviously woken up on the wrong side of the bed. And of course ”Tiny Dancer”. But those kinds of songs have been played so many times that they hardly affect you anymore. Kind of like ”Yesterday” by the Beatles – an incredible song the first dozen times listening to it, but then it sort of fades. It’s meaning is lost in your knowledge of the lyrics and the harmonies and the pattern of the song.

Anyway, when I heard ”Crocodile Rock”, something was awoken in me. I felt like there was so much more to the knighted English composer, and I started going through his back-catalog. Surely, he was a missing piece of a puzzle that cannot possibly be finished. ”Your Song”, ”Tiny Dancer”, ”Daniel”, ”Crocodile Rock”, ”Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, ”Rocket Man”, ”Bennie and The Jets”, well, it just goes on. His songs, his voice and his talent hold a certain magic which is only attained by the really great ones. That’s how I know Elton John will be a special concert here in Stockholm – something people will find meaningful and amazing. Don’t miss it.
