United Stockholms

Blink and you’ll miss it. The Stockholms in South Dakota and Iowa are so small you really have to be on the lookout for them to even register in your mind. All that’s remaining of Stockholm, Texas is a sand-filled graveyard. Stockholm, Maine is not much bigger but you can at least run into people with Swedish names in the local store, conveniently named Anderson’s.

Charlie Bennet, a photographer from Stockholm, Sweden and now residing in New York has been on a road-trip through the Stockholms of America to document the sights and sounds and to investigate what remnants of Swedishness there are remaining.

His work is on display at Stockholm Stadsmuseum until the end of the summer but can also be digested in book form. The 144 pages of pictorial beauty, with the added attraction of text by Gabriel Mellqvist, is released in June on Votum.

See The United Stockholms of America at Stockholm Stadsmuseum until August 31
