ART: GEORG BASELITZ’S ‘BLACK OUT PAINTINGS’
For the first time McCabe Fine Art is presenting German artist Georg Baselitz, who rose to fame in the 1960s and has become one of the most successful German artists. Inspired by folk art as well as German expressionism, his figures are often upside down and remind us of the complex and disoriented identity of the German people in the wake of the Second World War. The pieces on display are from his Collusion series, referencing the blacking-out of windows to protect against enemy strikes during war. The exhibition ends this weekend, so make sure you get down to McCabe Fine Art to catch it while you can.
LIVE: DEN SVENSKA BJÖRNSTAMMEN
Den Svenska Björnstammen didn’t take long to firmly establish themselves as one of Sweden’s favourite bands. Formed in 2008, and by 2012 they had already come to national attention by reaching the final three of the Metro On Stage music competition and scooping two prizes at the P3 Guld awards. They’re now back with their third album, Country, and you can catch them live at Debaser this Saturday.
CLUBBING: BUBBEL
DJ Taro, Tony Zoulias & Myggan have been putting on some of Sweden’s best hip-hop nights since the early nineties, and their set at Södra Teatern this Friday will extra special, as it doubles as a release party for R’n’B singer Keya’s new record Nyanser av blå.
CLASSICAL: HARDING INTERPRETS MAHLER
This Friday the Sveriges Radion symphony orchestra performs the work of the legendary Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. The performance will be preceded by ‘The Fantastic Journey’, a documentary about the orchestra’s collaboration with its English chief conductor Daniel Harding.
THEATRE: EN HANDELSRESANDES DÖD
Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman is one of the world’s most hard-hitting plays, the story of a man gradually worn into nothingness by the cruelties of life. Saturday is the last chance to catch director Björn Runge’s Swedish interpretation, En handelsresandes död, ahead of its taking a brief break before returning in December
COMEDY: CARL-EINER HÄCKNER
Despite his inclusion in this section of the weekender, Carl-Einer Häckner isn’t strictly a comedian. Instead, the Gothenburg-born magician, illusionist and performer tumbles several genres and techniques together to craft a hugely entertaining live show. He settles into a series of gigs at Södra Teatern this November, continuing this weekend.
