It seems pretty apt that an exhibition featuring artists who encourage ‘mindful viewing and contemplation’ should be hosted at a venue as idyllic as Artipelag. Here, amongst the cliffs and the pines, visitors will have a chance to view works by contemporary British ceramicist Edmund de Waal (b. 1964) and renowned Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964).
Edmund de Waal is perhaps best known by the public for his work as a writer. His memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes has been translated into 29 languages and has received much critical acclaim. However, the work he’s produced as a ceramic artist has made him a prominent name in the international art circuit, too.
This exhibition will mark the first time that de Waal’s work is presented in Sweden, so it’s only right that a broad range of his artwork from 2012 to present will be on display. The newest of these pieces has been created in direct dialogue with Morandi’s works – one of which will actually be produced on Artipelag’s gallery walls.
Similarly, it will be the first time that Morandi’s paintings have been substantially showcased in an exhibition not just in Sweden, but in the entire Scandinavian region. Artipelag will shine a light on around 50 of Morandi’s significant works, which have helped him earn a fan-base diverse enough to include Barack Obama and Federico Fellini in its ranks.
The Edmund de Waal & Giorgio Morandi exhibition at Artipelag will be on display until October 7.
