Autumn is when Stockholm surrenders to the jazz heads, as Stockholm Jazz Festival 2018 fills the city’s venues and clubs. And this year’s edition is the biggest ever, with 184 events spread across 57 venues during the festival’s ten day span. So, with the festival a couple of days into its life, what should you go and see? We’ve delved through the programme to pick out five highlights from the remainder of the festival.
POMONA DREAM
Ok, so Pomona Dream aren’t exactly jazz, but with their fluid, flexible take on electro-pop they certainly share something of its free-roaming spirit. They bring their helter-skelter, kaleidoscopic music to Innergården on Thursday, where they’re joined by Dim Out.
YAZZ AHMED
Yazz Ahmed grew up between London and Bahrain, and that upbringing has played a strong role in her music – her 2017 album La Saboteuse blends modern jazz with Arabic scales for a culture-blending artistic triumph. She’s also a favourite collaborator for others in the music world, having worked with Radiohead, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and many more.
ANNA NYGREN & PER KARLSTRÖM KVARTETT
Innergården’s festival continues with two nights of Anna Nygren and Per Karlström’s quartet. Karlström on piano and Nygren on vocals will be providing the music, and they’ll also be including guests in the show.

DAVID’S ANGELS
‘Angelic and brutal’ is a hell of a phrase to describe music, but that’s what Fasching went with in their promo for David’s Angels for a gig last year. The band, led by David Carlsson, play genre-bending jazz, with influences from rock, blues and everything else, and released their new album Traces last October.

DEKULA BAND
Guitarist Kahanga Dekula Vumbi is, naturally, the heart and soul of his band, who base their music around the rhythms and riffs he leads them with. They play Soukous music, a modern genre that grew from more traditional Congolese rumba, while also taking detours into reggae, blues, salsa and more.
