Scarlett Hooft Graafland Weekend

PARTY: JAMAICAN INDEPENDENCE PARTY
Jamaica gained its independence on August 6 1962, and now 57 years later Debaser are throwing a party to celebrate the country, and the rich musical legacy it has given the world. Four days after the actual independence day, they’re throwing a Jamaican Independence Party, hosted by club night Radical Rhythm Revue, that’ll be showcasing every bit of the musical goodness the island has to offer.
Aug 10, 23:00-03:00, Debaser Strand

GIG: DN-KONSERTEN
Dagens Nyheter‘s annual classical concert comes to Sjöhistoriska this weekend, with singer Malena Ernman and the Kungliga Filharmonikerna orchestra in the starring roles. There’ll also be a conversation between DN Culture’ Björn Wiman and the music critic Martin Nyström, as well as a bunch of other activities.
Aug 11, 13:00-15:30, Sjöhistoriska

CLUB: PARADISO SOUNDSYSTEM
Trädgården may be busy in Gothenburg this weekend with a takeover at the club Lounges for Way Out West, but that doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten Stockholm. In fact, they’re extended their usual opening hours to Sunday, with Paradiso Soundsystem the stars of a chill session in the Sunday sun. DJs are the Paradiso crew of Alf Balder, Papa, Musiq, Daniel Lien, Max Volym, Ron Diago and Binnie Smalls.

EXHIBITION: SCARLETT HOOFT GRAAFLAND
The strange power of isolated natural landscapes provides part of the power of Scarlett Hooft Graafland’s photographs, and the surrealist forms she inserts into them take the images to a whole other level. Graafland travels the world armed with a rucksack and camera, and uses these wild wide spaces as her canvas, upon which she creates her artworks, often involved the local people. It all comes together in photos that capture some of the enormity of their location, and you can see them at Fotografiska in this exhibition.
Scarlett Hooft Graafland: Vanishing Traces, Fotografiska, on display until Sep 8

FILM: DOC LOUNGE AT HORNSTULL BEER GARDEN
Summer bar and cultural space Hornstull Beer Garden is making its return this weekend, and will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of August. And they’re kicking off their opening weekend with a bang, as Doc Lounge Stockholm will be making their home there. Doc Lounge will be showing three films across the weekend, along with a range of other activities. On Friday, they’re showing the documentary Sittstrejken by David Wikdahl, about the demonstration by Afghan refugees a couple of years ago, in collaboration with the organisation Refugees Welcome Stockholm. The showing will include two panel discussions, one with the filmmaker and the film’s participants, and one on the situation in Afghanistan. On Saturday, in association with Stockholm Trans Film Festival, there’ll be two showings, Exercise One by Victoria Verseau and A Deal with the Universe by Jason Barker, along with another panel discussion. And on Sunday, it’s Allt vi äger by Emily Norling, including a talk with Norling about the film. Hornstull Beer Garden opens from 16:00 on Friday.
