It’s not very often we get to enjoy locally-produced fruit in Sweden. Apples are a lovely exception, and their time is now. Incredibly versatile, they can be used for both savory and sweet dishes, so no wonder Swedes love them. It’s our second most-eaten fruit, after the banana. Around this time of the year, the juicers in Österlen, Skåne, start turning the fruit from their apple trees into delicious juice. Approximately 50 per cent of the country’s apple consumption consists of Österlen apples. Get a few bottles and enjoy with your breakfast porridge, or save for Christmas and warm with cinnamon and cardamom.
Or why not get a bag of these red-cheeked delicacies from your local super market and make the easiest apple pie there is: layer sliced apples in a pan. Sprinkle a little sugar on top, and cover with your favourite granola and a bit of butter. Cover with foil and bake in the oven, at 200 C, for around 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with vanilla sauce or ice cream.
