Jelly Crystal is the solo project of Filip Johnson (who also plays in HOLY‘s band), who made a splash with his self-titled debut EP last year. Now he’s back with a new single, Now Awake, with Scott Walker and David Bowie listed as influences. Those influences are worn well on Now Awake, as Johnson revels in the kind of high-drama, high-art solo star role those musicians made their names with. Now Awake is epic in scale, fully-loaded, elegant, charismatic old-school glam-pop. Its grandly cinematic sound is made for movies, and who knows, maybe someone will put it in one someday.
