With We’re The Millers, the family road trip film gets a make-over when, imagine this – they’re not a real family! Instead they’re a ragtag group assembled by drug dealer David (Jason Sudeikis) to give him an air of obscurity as he smuggles drugs across Mexico’s border.
The trouble starts with the basic duality of the plot. On one hand, the comedy is almost entirely based on the idea that this is a group who don’t fit into the traditional American middle-class set. On the other hand, we know that the plot is going to plunge them towards a situation where they will aspire towards, and then be accepted into, the very culture that they antagonize. This means that even some of its funniest observations on the American bourgeoisie chime completely hollow. Still, as a throwaway comedy there are genuine laughs sporadically throughout, and even though Aniston’s world-weary stripper is about as consistent as an Swedish summer, the cast is strong, including those outside the Miller R.V.
