Put It In Paper

In the age of mass-production, 3D printing and other instant ways of getting your creation out to the design-devouring masses, a little slow design is a welcome contrast in our book.

Paper craft is a collection of art forms that use paper or card as its primary artistic medium, and is believed to have been invented in China during the 2nd century B.C. Origami, the Japanese art of folding paper into various designs, dates back to the 6th century A.D. The art form seems to be making a comeback, and we’re not referring to the cutesy scrapbooking that suburban housewives with too much time on their hands seem to be tinkering with.

At the exhibition 100 Colours, French-born designer Emmanuelle Moureaux recently showed that paper can be anything but bland and monotonous by suspending 840 sheets of paper from the ceiling. Meanwhile, Lebanese designer Najla El Zein’s 5,000 spinning paper windmills at London Design Festival proved that paper is all but static.

I Love Paper“There is something tangible and accessible about paper – its colours and shapes seem to speak to a lot of people”, says Fideli Sundqvist, a Stockholmer who calls herself a paper cut artist. After being mesmerized by the paper cuttings brought home by her brother as souvenirs from China, Sundqvist decided to start experimenting with the art form. “I’ve always liked working with my hands, and paper lets me express myself in a way that I really enjoy”, says Sundqvist. “I love the clear indication of craftsmanship involved, and all the time spent on these pieces.”

After having attained great success in her field, with prestigious brands such as Louis Vuitton and Malmstenbutiken among her clients, she is now ready to share her passion for papyrus with the rest of us. Her first book I Love Paper was recently released by book publisher Natur & Kultur, and is a handbook in how to start making your own paper craft. Just watch your fingers with the scissors.
