First staged in Stockholm in 2011, Fredrik “Benke” Rydman’s successful alternative take on the ballet classic Swan Lake has since played to 70.000 people in the Swedish capital alone. With shows also staged in Moscow, London, Hamburg, Vienna, Paris and Milan, the cast have racked up 289 performances in total.
The near 80 minute-long street dance show is of course filled with references to the classical ballet original, but what Benke has done with it – the plot centres around drugs, prostitutes and pimps – is to make it relevant. “There aren’t many princes and sorcerers running around today,” as he told us in an interview.
In December Swan Lake Reloaded brings this epic tale of good and evil to Dansens Hus in Stockholm for 12 performances. So all of you who missed the dance extravaganza the first time around, here’s your chance to catch up.
