A huge hit when it premiered a year ago, Swan Lake is back on stage at Dansens Hus and judging from the packed house at its first weekend run, its popularity is in no way diminishing.

Fredrik Benke Rydman’s modern interpretation of one of the world’s best-known and most beloved ballets is a visual thrill not to be missed. On his stage, the traditional and graceful ballet is transformed into a street-dancing fusion of electroclash and breakbeat with erotic undertones. It’s the ultra-hip Swan Lake in sneakers and jeans, where the swans are prostitutes and Von Rothbart is their evil pimp, keeping them under his spell through drugs.

“The initial idea for this production came when we were performing a Bounce show in London in 2009”, says Annica Sigfridsson, producer of Bounce. “Fredrik was walking around the city and found a vintage shop in Camden where he saw these white furs. For him that triggered an image of prostitutes, and at the same time he started thinking about swans.

“That lead him to start thinking about Swan Lake and that’s how he got the idea to put it on stage in a very different way from the original classic. And since he had actually danced in a Swan Lake production before he knew the story well, but the Swan Lake story has always been very hard to understand.

“Why is Von Rothbart this evil, and how does he have so much power over the swans? But Fredrik thought if he was a drug dealer there’s a reason and an explanation, and it makes the story more understandable in a way. And after the popularity of Bounce, we were asked to do shows all over the place, so he had the perfect opportunity to follow through on his idea.”

Showing now until February 3. General info here and ticket info here.
