ART: UP CLOSE-MARTIN SCHOELLER
The work of German photographer Martin Schoeller is remarkable for just how close it gets to some of the most well-known faces of our time. He has captured some of the biggest names in film, from Barack Obama to Zlatan Ibrahimović, and manages to do so in such a way that unveils a little bit of the person that most photographers miss. In addition to working with some of the most hyper-exposed people in our society, Schoeller also shines a light on those who normally fly under the radar. Hence his series on female body builders, a group of people who society generally ignores and who aren’t rewarded with fame or fortune for their dedication to their passion. Fotografiska is hosting Up Close, one of the biggest ever exhibitions of Schoeller’s work, this autumn.
LIVE: TOVE LO
There was a brief period as I browsed the gig guides for Stockholm this week where I wondered who I was going to pick as the highlight, but once I came across Tove Lo’s name there was no question. Lo’s 2014 album Queen Of The Clouds wasn’t so much shaking as world-dominating with an outrageous run of enormous pop hits including ‘Habits (Stay High)’, ‘Not On Drugs’ and the puritanical-censor baiting ‘Talking Body’. Check out if she can confirm her rise to the top of the Swedish pop pyramid by shaking Münchenbyggeriet to pieces on Saturday.
CLUBBING: NOBELBERGET
Nightclubbing has suffered from residential build-up and a new trend of ‘not-in-my-back-yard’-ism leading to stricter licensing laws around the city centre. One solution to this is to move the scene to the outskirts, and it’s this solution that Nobelberget hope will work for them. They’ve opened up a simply enormous new concert and entertainment venue in Sickla that we eventually have the capacity to host up to 3000 revellers. The venue is open every Friday and Saturday from 22-03, when it will be home to two club nights, LGBTQ club Venus in the venue’s cellar and Garaget. Nobelberget will host performances by some of Sweden’s biggest artists. Mapei, Goat and many more are dropping by for the opening night
CLASSICAL: TOKYO METROPOLITAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
This weekend Konserthuset hosts a visit from the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, which is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. It’s the first time the orchestra, directed by Kazushi Ono, has visited Sweden and they’ll be playing the music of Debussy, Ravel and Tjajkovskij.
THEATRE: EN FRÖJDEFULL JUL
Christmas is a time when disparate groups of people come together to spend awkward time in each other’s company. For a lot of people, distant friends and relatives who are mercifully absent during the rest of the year pop back into your life with all the subtlety, grace and sheer fun of a brick being tossed through your car windscreen. Alan Ayckbourn’s play En Fröjdefull Jul explores just how chaotic and traumatic a holiday season reunion can get, complete with drunk cooking, kids with guns and the kind of inter-familial tension not seen since Cleopatra had all her siblings massacred. If that sounds like a welcome distraction for you from the stresses of figuring out just how the hell cooking a turkey works, it’s playing at Stadsteatern all through the Christmas season.
