THEATRE: HEDDA GABLER
As the recent train wreck that was Suicide Squad proves, there’s a lot more to creating a complex fictional character than “what if…we made the good guys also a bit bad?”. For a real example of complexity in a character, look no further than Hedda Gabler, a fictional creation so deep that critics are still spilling oceans of ink over her today. Director Anna Pettersson’s (who once played the title role herself) take on the play involves a visual, experimental deconstruction of its key elements, to try and make a play that’s been performed a million times before feel fresh, insecure and dangerous. It plays all three days this weekend, with Electra Hallman in the title role.
GIG: STEVE BUSCEMI’S DREAMY EYES/ DRIFTER
It’s an indie double-bill on Saturday as HYMN magazine takes over Debaser Strand and transforms it into Klubb Hymn. Opening up the night at the NoMethod Record-signed duo Drifter, and then Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes headline at 21. Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes are a Stockholm-based four-piece who proudly boast one of the most polarising names in indie music (apparently Buscemi appeared to one of the band members in a dream and said it was ok, so that’s fine then). Their most recent single ‘Call Out’ was a kind of eighties slowdance indie, all soft synths and smooth groove, and their first song ‘Desire’ shows that they can do the scrappy, more up-tempo stuff just as well. Check them out on Saturday, and HYMN DJs close out the night.
Sep 10 @ 1800, Debaser Strand.
CLUBBING: F12 TERRASSEN
The slow, sad process of the summer clubs closing continues this weekend, with F12 Terrassen the latest to close its doors for another season. Luckily, they’ve got a solid line-up for the goodbye party, with Tove Lindholm and Joel Mull in place for Friday and Anna Kohlin and Henrik Bergqvist for Saturday. Swing by and catch the last embers of summer 2016.
