Witch season doesn’t usually come until the winter draws in, but musicians Mira Aasma and Bonander have brought it around to spring as they’re launching a special club night called Revival Of The Witch at new venue Slaktkyrkan this Wednesday. Aasma, who we interviewed last year, and Bonander both have new releases this week, Aasma’s new single Witches and Bonander’s new EP It’s A Girl, and they’re joined on the night by death-gospel artist Louise Lemón and electro-pop musician Paulina Palmgren. All four perform live, and there’ll be plenty of dark magic themes and surprises in store. We caught up with Aasma and Bonander before the gig.
Where did the idea for this joint show come from?
We met for the first time in Stockholm one year ago, and felt right away that we had to collaborate in some way. This fall we were both planning new music releases so we decided to make some kind of bigger release night together, of course it had be centred around witchcraft. Our friends who are working at Kraken in Slakthusområdet were about to open their new venue Slaktkyrkan, which is an old slaughter hall that looks like a church and we decided to do Revival Of The Witch there. Dark’n’glamourous.
What does the phrase ‘Revival Of The Witch’ mean to you?
It stands for the night when witches will rise to tear down the structures of today’s society and make it nice. There are so many interpretations and cultures around witchcraft/witches but in this case we see it as something strengthening, hopeful and utopian.
You’ve both got new releases with the Witches single and the It’s A Girl EP, tell us about those.
Mira: Witches appeared last year when I met some witches in Stockholm, and then used my idea of the witch to make myself feel safe and powerful in situations where I’d not be otherwise. I wanted to release something with only women involved in every part of the process so this was the perfect one.
Bonander: It’s a Girl contains a lot of frustration, anger, empowerment, joy and survival tactics concerning the issues of gender expectations and how identities are smothered by norms and ideas of how you should live your life. I have worked with dark, heavy, electronic and metallic sounds and it has been a very special journey creating it.
Tell us a little about what we can expect from the Revival Of The Witch show.
There will be four live acts, us (Mira Aasma and Bonander), Paulina Palmgren who’s releasing an EP and Louise Lemón who’s releasing an album. Scenography, smoke, brews from the kettle and invisible cats. Could it be even more almighty? We’re anyways SO excited to see your reactions!
Mira Aasma’s new single Witches is out on Birds on March 28th. Bonander’s new EP is out now on Icons Creating Evil Art. Louise Lemon’s Purge LP is out April 6th and Paulina Palmgren’s new EP På randen kapitel 1 is out on March 28.
