A pram march (Barnvagnsmarschenn) will take place on Friday, March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.

Organized by Riksförbundet för Sexuell Upplysning (RFSU), the demonstration aims to highlight maternal mortality in developing countries. It is hoped the discussions the event provokes will encourage Swedish politicians to do something to help.

About 800 females die each day because of birth complications. A staggering 99 percent of those affected live in developing countries where it is one of the more common causes of death amongst girls aged 15-19 years old.

This figure can be reduced by ensuring women receive the prenatal care they need, access to contraception and safe abortion. RFSU works with partner organizations around the world to help ensure women and girls get access to the right type of healthcare – and choices – they need.

In 2012, 600 people took part in the march in the Stockholm, with smaller demonstrations taking place throughout the country. Every year, participants receive a custom-designed rain cover for the pram, this year its been designed by illustrator Liv Strömquist.

A number of marches have been organized throughout the capital. Men and women are encouraged to turn up and show their support on this important date. Check here if you would like to participate and share this post to help raise awareness.
