Size Doesn’t Matter

With few limitations, the Attefall type house may, as of July 2 of this year, be erected on your land, without a building permit. The footprint may not exceed 25 square meters and the building can’t be taller than four meters, which makes for a home of somewhat diminutive proportions. This has not stopped Stockholm-based prefab house maker Sommarnöjen from getting inundated with inquiries for their designer mini-home dubbed c/o 25. We had a brief chat with Sommarnöjen’s Tomas Tjajkovski about his thoughts behind the design of c/o 25.

AttefallHouses_01

You are one of the pioneering producers of the new Attefall type micro houses with your c/o 25 model, and from what we hear you’ve had a huge influx of orders. Why is your house so popular?

The way we use architecture and interior designers to develop a new project is the same, regardless of being a “real” house or a small one, like the c/o 25. This means that c/o 25 looks like and feels like a proper house – not a friggebod or a diminished summer cottage. Carefully-considered proportions, features, positioning of the windows and a careful selection of materials that come together in something that feels like a real home. The c/o 25 is also made up of complete pre-fab units, meaning all tiles, plumbing, fixtures and so on, are already assembled upon arrival to the building site.

What has been your primary source of inspiration when designing the c/o 25?

Nature! We aspire to design buildings that harmonize well with its surroundings and enhance the beauty of any environment. We find cues in classic shapes and styles such as modernist cubes, traditional pitched roofs or barns. We see the beauty in simplicity and strive to enhance that trait in order to simplify everyday life. The key lies within the proportions of the building’s features, as well as careful attention to detail.

What would you say are the greatest challenges in designing a complete and unabridged home on such a small scale?

Thinking ahead and considering all possible functions and features that any client will want or need, and then positioning them in the most efficient way, maximizing open surfaces and creating built-in multiple functions for every space. We always want to create an airy feel with a sense of openness, without sacrificing functionality.
