Clubbing: Choco Canel

Posted January 20, 2017 in Music

Choco Canel, aka Sandra Bergman, is one of Stockholm’s most recognisable DJs and club arrangers. Formerly, with Erik Dellgren, behind the club Send In The Clowns at Pet Sounds Bar, she now runs the Coco Transistor Presents club at Bar Brooklyn and other venues, as well as DJing all over the city. We met her to ask about a few of her favourite songs.

A track you associate with when you started DJing?

The Stone Roses – I Wanna Be Adored. I started my career in the beginning of 2000 at Bar Nada on Åsögatan (where I’ve been booking the DJs for 10 years now) playing every Sunday, and the bartender always wanted to hear that song. Many fine memories, love that tune.

A new discovery you can’t stop playing?

Esamba (Rasmus Faber Remix) – Junior Jack. From the Rasmus Faber ReWorks vol.2.

A good track to play at the start of a set to warm things up?

Always depends on where I am and what kind of set I’ll be doing. Nowadays I mostly do event gigs (corporates, weddings, birthdays). If I’m doing a set at a bar I would start with something like Shark City (Tropico X) by Niki & The Dove and if I’m about to kick start a dance floor at a wedding it would be something more like Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars or Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyoncé.

And a good one to finish a set?

For a bar set: Brand New Day feat. Joelistics (Psychedelic Bossa Remix) – Fab Samperi. For an event set: Higher & Higher (Your love keeps lifting me) – Jackie Wilson, I’ve Had The Time Of My Life – Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes or Händerna Mot Himlen – Petra Markund”. But it always depends on what mood you wanna give the crowd – go home and sleep or let’s keep on partying!

A track to revive a dancefloor that’s dying?

Haha, sadly enough Macarena! Kom Igen Lena by Håkan Hellström and Emergency by Icona Pop always do the trick too

One for an outdoor summer set?

For a bar gig: What A Great Day by Flamingo Star. For an event gig: Love On Me -Galantis.

And one for a dark indoor set in the middle of winter?

Lady’s Bridge – Richard Hawley. My guilty pleasure. We’d have to be totally snowed in so no-one can leave and have a lot of candles

A track you can’t wait to play but haven’t yet gotten the chance to?

There are soooo many… But Calcadao – Riovolt

And finally, one of your all-time favourites that you keep coming back to?

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – Elton John. Hard to pick one though!
