Today marks the opening of Lux’s new concept and restaurant “Lux Dag För Dag.” Yesterday Totally Stockholm got a chance to delve into the delicious tastes that Lux will be offering at their new eatery and it was quite the treat!

“We will be starting the menu from scratch every day to compliment the seasons in accordance with the different produce we can receive from our surroundings,” said creative leader Henrik Norström.  “Our food will be only the freshest ingredients and be mostly local produce. We want every experience at Lux Dag För Dag to be a unique one – it will always be something new and original every time you decide to eat with us.”

As the creative and skilled chefs carefully cut the locally caught fish for our lunch, I sat there admiring the ambience. The color palate was perfect – with “cool” colors of purple, blue, and gray. Light touches gave it a homey feel – pillows featuring different animals, and chalkboards with the written menus hanging on the walls.

A nice addition that will also be a part of the new Lux is the Lux Walk Through, which is an alternative option for people who want to indulge in the fresh produce and courses from the menu but don’t have the time to sit down. The walk through gives it that personal connection with the city and more of a small town feel – people can also get the chance to get exclusive recipes and advice from the chefs. The window is inviting and a great way to bring more people to Lux’s quarters.

Now let’s talk about the food! Sometimes bread can seem like a miniscule thing but it’s surprising what a nice touch it can be if the bread is really nice – a type that is both soft and different to what you’ve had before. Lux had delicious bread with a side of butter that resembled a brie texture and was a standout compared to others, which is what you look for even in the little things!

The first course had the most amazing flavors. The first noticeable trait of the dish was the presentation. It was a great display of creativity with the mashed potatoes surrounding the meat and the crisps carefully scattered on top. The oxtail was cooked to perfection – with the meat breaking apart easier than a crumbled cookie. The mashed potatoes that surrounded the meat were the ideal compliment and matched the juices from the meat beautifully. The perfect topping to the dish was the crisps that were fluttered on top. It was the nicest touch on top of the moistness of the meat and the softness of the potatoes.  Eating the three together really gave an amazing flow of flavors into your mouth.

For the second course we were finally able to try the fish that saw cut in front of our eyes earlier on. Not being a huge fan of fish, I was a bit skeptic as to how I would like it but the fish had some great flavors.  The sauce and carefully cooked tomatoes were a great combination with the meal. I found it to be a very intelligently constructed dish and it made it an enjoyable meal even for a non-fish lover! I do have to say my favorite part was the cauliflower. It was brought separately from the fish in an amazing ceramic bowl and it was cooked to perfection! It’s such a small piece of the meal but having the vegetable separate from the fish impressed me. It was the right decision to present the two separately. A fun fact I learned during the meal from Henrik – the fish was caught from the water that is just behind Lux! They weren’t kidding when they said local!

The last course was also divine.  An apple based sorbet that they make fresh in their kitchen from hand-picked apples. The taste was incredible with some added Macedonia nuts and walnuts. It was such a fall-esque desert and perfect for the present time. It was just the right thing to end an incredible meal.  But it wasn’t over…

What’s one of the most important parts of Swedish life? Coffee! It’s not difficult to get coffee right in Sweden but it is a challenge to get it better than the rest and I think Lux won that battle. First off – the French press styled brew is the only way to go if you want to get the best quality of coffee. Not all do it this way, but Lux Day by Day has seemed to catch onto what a difference it makes. Moreover, the coffee was exquisite. Just strong enough but not overpowering. What a note to leave on!

Lastly, I’d like to comment on service. It’s a given that when you are trying to present your restaurant to people for the first time that you’re going to make sure that the service is impeccable, but it was beyond expectations. Drinks topped, breadbasket refilled, and smiles from everyone. I was most impressed with the warmth by everyone involved. It’s hard to find real warmth here in Sweden from people and it’s a complete bonus when there is a place that people make you feel entirely comfortable and at ease.

Lux Dag För Dag is a complete hit in my book. From entrance to seating to eating – it’s a pleasurable experience. The eatery allows easier access for Stockholmers to try out cuisine from the adorable brick building on Lilla Essingen. It has been 10 years of fine dining for Lux in Stockholm and sometimes change can be worrying, but not when the change is this good! Lux fits nicely into the city’s road to clean eating and I think it will keep its place at the top of Stockholm’s best eats.
