Stockholm

The spring of 2014 has proved a goldmine for music named with things to do with Stockholm, as a selection of Swedish singles and the solo album by rock icon Chrissie Hynde have been released in quick succession.

It’s one thing when old Stockholm pop legends Docenterna release a song called Södermalm – we’d expect that. And nor were we surprised when new Swedish artists like Zacharias Blad (Stockholm, released this winter), Jonathan Undhagen (Åh Stockholm) or even a punk-hopper from Jokkmokk named Kitok (STHLM City) use the capital’s moniker in a title.

But it’s a bit more surprising when Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders fame crowned her comeback by naming her debut solo effort after Stockholm.

Chrissie met Björn Yttling in a coffee shop in Cleveland and things evolved from there into a serious bout of Stockholmia. The album was recorded and written in collaboration with Björn Yttling and Jocke Åhlund in the Ingrid studio on Södermalm and seeing Hynde walking our streets like a mere mortal – complete with warpaint in the Swedish colours or draped in the Swedish flag – has been a regular occurence after she was magnetized by the Stockholm music scene.

Chrissie answers the obvious question regarding the christening of her debut solo work. Why Stockholm?

”You know, Stockholm was kinda my Carnaby Streeet. I missed London in the 60s and I didn’t really know what to expect when I came to Sweden. Unless you’re blind, it would be very hard not to fall in love with it, because it really is breath-taking. Mainly it’s just got this very fertile artistic community. I just met so many great players here. What I like is rock bands, and what I met is guys who play in rock bands who really like rock music. And who are really good players. They are all good-looking guys too and I like that. That is another element that makes it worthy to call it Stockholm.”
