GÖTGATAN

It might seem a long way off now but in 1948 the poorest district in the city was the site of a riot. On Easter Monday somewhere towards 10 000 young people congregated at Medborgarplatsen on Södermalm and began throwing stones and bottles at the police, who hit back with batons and horse-whips. This is the scene from which we follow four youths and their struggle to win back the power over their own lives.

Götgatan is a play by Jens Ohlin about the art of stigmatising a neighbourhood, and could just as well refer to modern times. Apart from the jazz soundtrack, of course.

The Unga Dramaten play Götgatan is playing at Målarsalen until April 26
