FRANK TURNER & THE SLEEPING SOULS (UK)

The end of a long-term relationship. Firebomb-filled live shows. Winner of the 2011 AIM Award for best live act. An Olympic opening ceremony. A jam-packed Wembley. Four acclaimed albums.  These are just a few things British folk musician Frank Turner has been up to in the past few years. He now returns to Sweden. Last summer’s performance at the Bråvalla festival was highly acclaimed and now he brings Tape Deck Heart – his fifth studio album – to Debaser Medis. Those who of you who’ve followed Turner’s career since his solo debut in 2005 will have seen how the punk poet (and former front man of the band Million Dead) slowly morphed into something resembling a “pop star,” although Turner would of course never describe himself like that. He prefers the word “entertainer” with its tradition of vaudeville, theater and variety, and still sees himself as part of the underground scene he originally came from. Punk has always been a cornerstone of his music. Expect an uptempo gig with a dark soul and a festival atmosphere. Sing-alongs and foot-stomping are a certainty.

DUCKING PUNCHES (UK): 19:20

Ducking Punches started out as a solo project by musician Dan Allen, but now consists of a full band with members from bands, Manbearpig, Other Half and Bad Ideas. Ducking Punches are currently touring with their latest album, Dance Before You Sleep, a folk punk offering described by critics as full of raw emotion and brilliant arrangements.

ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD (US): 20:00

Andrew Jackson Jihad was formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 2004 by Sean Bonnette and Ben Gallaty. Playing a punky kind of folk music, the band have also been somewhat praised for their macabre lyrics. 2005 saw the debut album Candy Cigarettes and Cap Guns and the following year they played at the New Times Music Showcase and received a nomination for “Best Americana band.” That very same year they also managed to take home the “Best of Phoenix Award.” The band has since released a number of studio and live albums and is now once again on the road with new material and a European tour.

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, Ducking Punches, & Andrew Jackson Jihad are at  Debaser Medis on February 26.
