Theatre Highlight: The Events

Acts of mass violence towards civilians such as terrorist attacks and school shootings are obviously headline news events, but Scottish playwright David Greig’s play The Events takes a look at what happens in the aftermath of one of these tragedies when the 24-hour news cameras have moved on. In it, Claire, a church minister in a small town who runs a church choir must deal with the psychological trauma of an attack on her choir. Grieg wrote the play after Anders Behring Breivik’s massacre in Norway, after he became obsessed with trying to understand the personality of a murderous fanatic and what could cause someone to commit these atrocities. It’s a journey that Claire repeats in the play, as she struggles to understand the boy who walked into her choir and brought so much pain into her life. This is a guest performance by the Gothenburg English Studio Theatre.
